Reading & Blogging Goals for 2010

Looking over my 2009 goals, I feel like I did a pretty good job fulfilling them!  However, this year my goals are going to be very different.

This year, it’s not about numbers.  Yes, I still plan to read a lot – I love reading, and I naturally read quickly.  I have set a goal of 350 books in 2010, but if I don’t reach it, I honestly don’t care.  Instead, I want to focus on the types of books I read.  I’m not going to join any challenges competing with others on the number of books or pages I’ve read (even for fun, like I did in 2009) – it’s going to be about reading deliberately this year.  Numbers don’t matter!

- Read more literary fiction: When looking through the books I consider my top of 2009 (not necessarily my 5 star rated books, but the ones that have stuck with me for months after reading them), it’s literary fiction like Never Let Me Go, The Little Stranger and The Help that really stand out.  I want to read more of these!

- Read more of my own books/library books:  I want at least 1/3 (preferably 1/2) of the books I read in 2010 to be non-review copies.

- Read more mysteries: I’ve been reading a lot more mysteries in the latter half of 2009 – I want to continue that trend!

- Read more ebooks: I’ve had a Sony PRS-505 for a long time, and upgraded to the Sony Reader Touch for Christmas (thanks Mom & Dad!) I used to only use my Reader when I was traveling, but I want to start using it a lot more at home!

- Blog/life balance: I want to make sure I keep blogging and reading fun, rather than turning it into a job.  If I want to take a break, or don’t feel like reading, that needs to be okay.  I’m not going to let my blog make me feel guilty!

- Selectively accept review copies: I’ve become very selective about the review copies I’ve been accepting, and I want to continue that.  If it doesn’t appeal to me, I don’t want to review it!

- Two of my goals in 2009 were to read more non-fiction and to read more longer books.  I’m really happy with my progress on this goal in 2009, and I want to continue at this level in 2010.

Great goals! I have a lot of similar goals especially to read my own books and be more selective on accepting review copies.

350 is a huge number! Happy reading in 2010.

Those are awesome goals, and I like how you articulated them... 350 is a HUGE number to me, lol... I need to be better at non-review copies this year, too. Happy reading!

Those are great reading goals. I don't think i'll ever come close to 350 books, I'm a slow reader. I also want to read more of the books I own.

Happy reading in 2010!

Hi - I really enjoy your blog! Congratulations on posting so much in 2009...I'm sending positive thoughts your way for your 2010 goals. BTW - how long does it take you to read a book?? to read as much as you do, I wouldn't be able to do anything else....

You are absolutely right...it's books like The Help, The Little Stranger and Never Let Me Go that really stand out. When you read them, you wish they would never end! I love your goals. They make alot of sense!

Great goals -- I too want to read more of the books I want to read -- borrowed, owned, review doesn't matter as long as each book actually interests me.

Reading and blogging should not be sources of stress or guilt.

You have set forth some great goals that are definitely attainable. I'm looking forward to another year of wonderful reviews and recommendations.

Keeping balance is such a great goal; it is easy to let this blogging/commenting run one's life (she says as she comments at 5:40am). :-)

Great goals, Swapna. It can be so hard to find balance, but I'm sure you'll be able to do it. Good luck!

I'm noticing a lot of bloggers (myself included) are looking for more balance in 2010...I think we all got a little overwhelmed in 2009 - there was so much going on and the review books exploded!

Good luck with all your goals, Swapna...they sound great. And Happy New Year!

My goal is to really dig into my own books this year. There are so many good ones sitting there, waiting patiently!

Great goals. As a book blogger, I totally understand them. I too am trying to be more selective in what I say yes to, but I should be even more selective.

And I use my Kindle the same way you use your ereader, but would also like to use it more. Unlike some naysayers who like the "feel of a book" I LOVE the lightness and ease of reading my Kindle.

However, I just don't buy that many books (since most I get are review copies). I did just load 4 books on there.
