Welcome to the Thursday Tunes! Each week, I will showcase music, whether new or old. Hopefully you will find something that interests you here!
In honor of A.R. Rahman's two Academy Award wins on Sunday night, I decided to feature one of his Bollywood albums this week. Dil Se has become a modern classic in India. The music is just amazingly beautiful, and the tracks are so different. Even if you are unfamiliar with this album, you might recognize the first song, "Chaiyya Chaiyya." It's an immensely popular song and was featured at the beginning of the Clive Owen movie Inside Man. Its got an amazing beat, and is a staple at any Indian party - it'll make you want to dance! "Jiya Jale" has more of a classical twist while still being modern (and I have to say, if you find the video, Shah Rukh Khan looks good in this song), while "Dil Se Re" and "Satrangi Re" both have great rhythms and are just incredible songs. My favorite, though, is "E Ajnabi" - it's got this quiet beauty and is such a powerful song, even if you don't understand the words (which I don't - though I'm Indian, I speak Telugu, not Hindi. Most people from India speak Hindi, but since I was born and brought up in the US, I don't!).

If you liked the songs from Slumdog Millionaire, you will love this album! Even if you haven't heard the Slumdog Millionaire songs, give this album a chance. A.R. Rahman really is a musical genius, and I'm so glad he's finally getting the recognition he deserves! If you like what you hear, the Dil Se soundtrack can be purchased from the Amazon.com MP3 Store for just $5.94!

A.R. Rahman's sound is beautiful and very different than what we are use to listening to.
I like it. It would be fun to play this with the children and to expose them to another type of music.

Ahh! This is one I haven't seen, it's going on the netflix queue now! :)
I loved the songs from "Slumdog Millionaire" -- and loved the performances at the Oscars! I've had "Jai Ho" in my head for days. My dad, sister and I are learning the dance they performed and I'm pretty sure we'll wind up blasting it on YouTube! :) Great, interesting post!
A.R. Rahman rocked the Oscar's on Sunday night. A very much deserved win. I still haven't seen Slumdog Millionaire but it's definitely in my queue. :D I had heard Chaiyya Chaiyya before but the others were unfamiliar to me. Nice!

I was so excited when A.R. Rahman won his two Oscars on Sunday. It's pretty much my favorite award show moment ever...of any of the award shows. He's a genius. :)
I love that you chose to feature the music from Dil Se. That's classic Rahman (though his music is all good, I would have a difficult time picking a favorite). "Ae Ajnabi" is my favorite too. I get such a strong visual of the movie when I hear it, but I also love that wandering, gentle quality you described.
Also, this site provides translations for those who desire them. Here is the specific page for Dil Se. It's great for those of us who are not native speakers of Hindi. :)
He is amazing! And prolific! And effortlessly different in each movie! Slumdog, while being good, is far from his best work - there are some absolute gems from some of his early Tamil films that I still love.
Since you mentioned you can't speak Hindi, let me add that AR Rahman composed music for a lot of Hindi films (including Dil Se) without really knowing any Hindi himself!
I think 'E Ajnabi' is a great song too, it has even better lyrics.
