True Blood - Episode 1

This morning, I woke up to no internet or cable (Comcast was having yet another outage), and instead of finishing up the reading for my evening class like I should have, I decided to do a little TiVo watching. I ended up watching the first episode of True Blood, the new HBO series that is based on Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series. (If you're curious, the first book in the series is Dead Until Dark (Southern Vampire Mysteries, No. 1). I haven't ever read the books, but I decided to try out the series.

The basic premise is that the Japanese have invented a synthetic blood which satisfies the nutritional needs of all vampires. Because they now had a legitimate source of food, vampires decided to come out of hiding and declare themselves openly. This was met with all the fear and suspicion you would expect.

Sookie Stackhouse is a waitress in Louisiana, but she has a special gift: she can read minds. Her boss Sam, her brother, her best friend, and her grandmother (who really wants a vampire to come to talk about the Civil War with her library group), round out the cast, which is one of the best parts of the show.

I have mixed feelings about the first episode. On one hand, it was a bit slow, and I didn't love it. On the other hand, I think the show has a lot of potential, and I'll definitely be watching the rest of the season!

If you're interested, here is the trailer for True Blood:

I am so glad you posted about this. Although I don't get HBO, I'd planned to get the first season on DVD. Keep us posted about your feelings on the show.

I'll probably be checking it out dvd too. I'm a HUGE fan of the creator's other series, Six Feet Under. So I need to give this one a try. It looks like it could mix drama and comedy in an interesting way!

I'm a huge fan of the book series and my husband agreed that we could subscribe to HBO just so I could see the show. I really like it so far. It's edgier than the books and not quite as funny, but I still am enjoying it.
