Musing Mondays

Do you treat books carefully, or do you just treat them as any other object? Do you have certain things you refuse to do with books (write in them, etc)? If so, what are they?

My answer to this question has definitely changed over the last 10 years or so. Back then, I used to write in books all the time - when I found a quote I liked, I underlined it. I wrote questions, comments, and thoughts in the margins and generally didn't hesitate to mark up a book in any way.

At some point, my feelings on the subject changed. Now, I won't allow a pen anywhere near my books. I like having pristine copies of the books I love. The only thing I will occasionally do is dog-ear a book, but I don't even like that; I'll only do it if there really is nothing else to use as a bookmark (or if I'm in bed and tired, and the bookmarks are in the other room).

So I guess my answer is that I'm very careful with books now. I probably have enough books to qualify as a collector, and shouldn't a collector be careful with items in a collection?

I say amen to that. How our attitude changes over the years.

With age comes appreciation. I have so many books I could probably start my own used bookstore. But, I really hate to part with them.

lol-I read your post earlier and realized I hadn't done mine yet but in the process somehow forgot to comment here. Yikes.

It's funny how we change over the years. I'm much more mindful now of how I treat things than I used to be.

What do you do now with your school books as opposed to then? Use stickies or make notes?

I really think it's normal to treat books very well if you are going to keep them, but I don't. That's why I think it's odd that I try to be so very careful, ya know?
