In Italy, you visit a LOT of churches. My personal favorite was St. Paul's Outside the Walls in Rome. It's a little off the beaten path, so most people don't get the chance to see it while they're in Rome, or don't know about it, but it really is a must-see site, both for its tranquility and its sheer beauty. Plus it's a nice escape from the sea of tourists!
Walking up to it, it's pretty unassuming - you walk up to a pretty ordinary looking church and have to walk ALL the way around it (it's a pretty big place) to get to the entrance...
So you're walking all the way around the church, and all of a sudden you see the following:
And you think huh, that looks different...(And it is, the church burned down in the 19th century, so it's largely reconstructed). And then you walk in, and see this:
Beautiful, isn't it?
